Moving Fragile Items

One of the most stressful parts of moving is when it comes time to pack your fragile items. The fear and stress that some of your most valuable items might be damaged or broken during a move is a problem that many people face when moving, especially if it’s a long-distance move. Luckily, there are some things you can do to protect your fragile items when you’re packing:

  • Materials like plastic sheeting, bubble wrap, newspapers, masking tape and padded blankets are some of the best materials you can use to protect fragile items during a move.
  • Glasses, dishes, antiques and collectables can be wrapped in newspaper and bubble wrap, then reinforced with tape to hold them in place.
  • When packing dishes, pack them one layer at a time, making sure there is a barrier between each dish to avoid scratching.
  • If you are moving wine, spirits or other glass bottles, visit your local wine supplier for boxes with built-in cardboard separators.
  • When moving electronic items such as TVs, DVD players or other appliances, you should pack them in their original boxes, if you still have them. If you don’t have them, check your local hardware store for shallow boxes in the size you need.
  • Large, durable blankets can help protect furniture during moves and prevent scratches and tears.
  • When packing house plants, place them in a plastic trash bag filled with a little bit of water. Leave a little opening at the top of the bag so that air can get in.
